Ft. Myers Sandsculpting Event

Who knew building sandcastles could be turned into a competitive and artistic event?

The 23rd annual event was held at the Holiday Inn Beach resort on Ft. Myers Beach weekend of November 6th.  16 stations were set up for the world's top sand sculptors who were competing for the American Sandsculpting Championship.  The winner qualifies for the World Championship which is to be held in Federal Way, Washington next Labor Day.

It was a lot of fun for the kids and adults.  There were plenty of vendors on hand offering various goods and services.  The weather was just beautiful.  A little breezy perhaps for the sand sculptors, but just a lovely setting on the Gulf of Mexico.

What talented people.  We had fun watching them create their brand of art using kitchen utensils, spray bottles and anything else they found that could do the job. Thomas Koet of Melbourne beat out 15 other competitors Sunday with a sculpture called "The Mirage".

If you live in the area, or plan to visit this time next year, make a note to come and experience this event.  To view more photos go to www.news-press.com.
